In the vibrant city of Halle, Germany, the MFG Mobile Sauna stands out as an innovative solution for urban public spaces. Created by Friedrich Gerlach, Emil Löber, and Sophia Reissenweber, this mobile sauna transforms small urban areas, such as parking spots, into unique relaxation and interdisciplinary exchange zones for students and teachers at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle.

Nestled along the picturesque Saale River, the university inspired the creators to design a mobile sauna

that could be enjoyed on or near the campus. This portable sauna accommodates four to five people and can be easily assembled and transported by just three individuals, highlighting its versatility and convenience.Unlike traditional wooden saunas, the MFG Mobile Sauna uses translucent polycarbonate panels, creating a transparent environment that blends the interior with the exterior. For safety, the stove is located outside, ensuring no exhaust fumes enter the sauna, maintaining a clean and safe atmosphere.

A standout feature of the sauna is its transport mechanism. The supporting leg transforms into a foldable drawbar, allowing the sauna to be moved on a single axle, much like a wheelbarrow. During assembly and disassembly, the overhanging roof acts as a counterweight, providing stability. Combined with its lightweight frame, these features make the sauna easily deployable in various campus locations and urban public spaces.

Accessibility was a primary consideration in the design process. The project is prominently featured on the university’s website, offering detailed instructions for proper sauna use. The sauna is powered by waste wood from the university’s model construction workshops, accessible through an internal ordering system managed by the staff, promoting sustainability and efficient resource use.
